Dear HeartWood Friend,

Since 1989, Heartwood Centre for Community Youth Development has provided a wide variety of youth engagement programs and services to thousands of children in Nova Scotia. Our offerings have included youth action teams, youth leadership development programs, youth facilitation training, mentoring, and outdoor education and recreation programs. HeartWood pursues various funding sources to ensure that we can continue to provide as many services to youth as possible.

Many of you have contributed to HeartWood in the past or have been touched by HeartWood in some way over the years. You know that HeartWood has a strong track record of delivering successful programs that often transform a youth’s life. You have likely met some of our highly skilled, experienced, caring and knowledgeable staff. You understand the importance that HeartWood places on community. Now, HeartWood is reaching out to our community and asking for donations so that we can impact even more youth and share our knowledge with even more organizations.

Many Nova Scotian teenagers do not have opportunities to try new adventures, share their skills, and make a meaningful contribution to their communities. Youth are at a crucial point in their lives when they need support from peers and adults, but they are often met with distrust, fear, and avoidance. HeartWood believes that youth deserve a voice and that youth and adults working together create more vibrant and caring communities. At Heartwood, we value all youth and understand that many need a supported chance to reach their personal best, now rather than in the future.

This past year, some of our programs and services included leadership camps, wilderness canoe trips, and Atlantic Youth Leadership Camp. We also received many requests for support from those working with youth, and so we created and tailored programs based on their requests. We also provided public capacity-building programming such as Leading Innovative and Engaging Summer Youth Programs, and Mentoring in the Outdoors.

One youth who has been impacted by HeartWood is Dave Welsford; this is an excerpt from his story:
“HeartWood is where my leadership skills began. In high school I was heading down a difficult path. The HeartWood experience helped re-shape my thinking and made me realize what was important and what I was really interested in. HeartWood helped me focus my career as well in encouraging me to attend community college for screen arts and now I’m at NSCAD doing a fine arts degree. Without HeartWood’s positive influence and supportive programming, who knows where I would be?”

Think about the thousands of youth who have been positively affected by HeartWood over the years. Think about the thousands of youth we have not yet met. Our work is far from complete and we need your help to continue making a difference to youth in need.

HeartWood sincerely thanks you for all the ways that you have supported HeartWood in the past and we hope you will consider us in your charitable giving this year.

Thank you,

Maria Cain
Executive Director
